On Tuesday, October 10th, Commissioner Director Zach Rich presented a proclamation to members of the Hunterdon County Youth Coalition (HCYC) at their monthly meeting identifying October 6th as “Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day” in Hunterdon County, an initiative to raise awareness of the potential for dependency on prescribed medication and its link to heroin and fentanyl use in the state of New Jersey.
Commissioner Director Rich shared, “This is a deeply personal issue for me, as I have witnessed several acquaintances struggle with opioid abuse. New Jersey is in the midst of an opioid abuse epidemic. Recognizing October 6th as “Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day”, is important to bring awareness and education not just to members of the public, but also to
health care providers, community leaders and state lawmakers.”
The HCYC members are recognized as leader and role models, dedicated to the betterment of the community by promoting a substance-free environment. The HCYC changes policies in schools and the community, by making positive changes to create a healthier lifestyle.
Hunterdon County students in grades 6th – 12th grades are eligible for membership in the HCYC and are welcome to attend meetings and events throughout the year.
Mr. Rich further stated, “I am proud that in Hunterdon County, both the Health Department and the Department of Human Services have partnered to bring resources, education, and services to the community to address the opioid epidemic through direct grants to nonprofits and collaboration through the Opioid Task Force.”
The Commissioner Board will continue to support initiatives designed to raise awareness about opioid abuse in New Jersey and take steps to prevent addiction.”
